For the last 40 years in the run up to Christmas, the equestrian world descends on London’s Olympia to kick start the festive season.

The main events centre around show jumping classes but, particularly with the success of our equestrian Olympians, this year there will be more of a focus on grand prix dressage with expectations of seeing some of the medal winners perform.

With International show jumping and dressage competitions this year, both with World Cup™ Qualifiers, the Olympia Horse Show is one of the most important events in the equine calender. Returning this year is the Extreme (Carriage) Driving, but for the first time ever it will be a FEI World Cup™ Qualifying event and of course those lovely canines make a twice daily appearance on the Kennel Club Dog Agility course all topped off with the Christmas Finale – this year with a circus theme – where Father Christmas leads the audience in a hearty bout of carol singing.

Both matinee and evening performances are packed with other entertaining features such as the mounted police displays, Shetland pony grand national and the world famous Jean-Francois Pignon working his horses – which is described in previous years as “quite beautiful!” Plus, for the first time ever, this year there will be a carriage driving world cup event.

Leave plenty of time to visit the massive shopping village where you can pick up anything equestrian and there are often bargains to be had! Probably best to arrive early for an evening performance to make the most of this or stay late if attending a matinee.

If you are prepared to push the boat out you could join a party with the Team GB equestrian medalists on Wednesday night or take a box with corporate entertainment and access to an exclusive VIP bar. There are also “Rover Tickets” which allows you entrance into this area, but not into the private boxes.

It runs from 17th – 23rd December and there are some great Olympia Horse Show and Hotel Packages with two excellent hotels in particular available for the duration.

First up is the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum – a modern and stylish 4 star hotel offering its guests a warm and friendly atmosphere, excellent accommodation and a superb central London location. The hotel is ideally placed in the heart of Kensington, which is only a short tube or taxi ride away from Olympia, plus a walk away from other tourist attractions, such as Hyde Park, the Natural History Museum and the Royal Albert Hall. Gloucester Road tube station is also just a minute’s walk from the Holiday Inn London Kensington Forum, offering excellent access across the capital.

After spending either the afternoon or evening at Olympia guests can retreat to one of the Holiday Inn London Kensington Forum’s spacious, clean and stylish guest rooms. All of the hotel suites are well equipped for comfort with air-conditioning, satellite TV, internet access, direct dial phone and mini-bar. For extra convenience the Holiday Inn London Kensington Forum also boasts on-site parking (charges apply), 24 hour room service and a well-equipped gym.

As well as the fantastic room service, visitors to the Holiday Inn London Kensington Forum can choose between an array of dining and drinking options. There is hearty grub and proper pints in the traditional pub, European cuisine and fine wine in the Consortia Restaurant and specialist drinks in the relaxed Cocktail Lounge.

The second hotel is the 3 star St Giles close to the hustle and bustle of London’s Oxford Street, but still being very accessible to Olympia by tube.

Boasting a superb location the St Giles Hotel is just a short walk from the British Museum, Covent Garden and Leicester Square. Within easy reach of Tottenham Court Road tube station the St Giles Hotel London provides a great base from which to explore the Capital.

After a busy day exploring Olympia return to the St Giles and treat yourself to a dish in one of the hotels three fantastic restaurants. From the splendid Il Grasso Restaurant to the Chikara Restaurant serving an array of Chinese dishes and the Japanese inspired Hakuba Restaurant there is plenty to choose from. Why not relax with a drink in the Lazy Dog Bar before retiring for the night.

Staying at the St Giles Hotel you can take advantage of the Central YMCA Health and Fitness Club, featuring a stunning 25 metre heated indoor swimming pool, Cardio Zone and free weights. There is a nominal charge to use the YMCA Health and Fitness Club payable locally. The hotel also offers reduced cost parking at the NCP car park located beneath the hotel for its guests (see the hotel concierge for details)

Packages can be bought from London Theatre Breaks and more information can be found at

The Equestrian Olympics produced some fantastic results for the British team. I am a dressage rider, so I may be biassed, but I think that the dressage results were the best results.

Dressage

Great Britain had never won a medal, of any colour, in dressage but in 2012 the British team won the gold team medal and two individual medals – a gold & a bronze. Anybody who follows dressage will know that this was not a total surprise – in fact the bookies had Great Britain as favourites to win the gold team medal. However, the result has to be seen in the context that Great Britain has never won a dressage medal and so went from dressage “also rans” to favourites and, most importantly, held their nerves and won three medals.

I have just watched Charlotte Dujardin / Valegro’s (Individual Gold) and Adelinde Cornelissen / Parzival’s (Individual Silver) Freestyle tests again. It is easier to focus on the quality of the tests when there is no tension about the result ! I wanted to see if I agreed with the judges. Were Charlotte and Valegro better than Adelinde and Parzival?

At this level both tests were very very good and both tests deserved very high marks and the medals they were awarded. However, the difference between the two tests is essentially the way the horse was going. Parzival is tighter in the neck and at times the poll was not the highest point and he was behind the vertical. For anybody not familiar with dressage what does this mean:

  • poll was not the highest point – the poll is the top of the head which is just behind the ears. FEI definitions of dressage movements state that the poll should be the highest point of the horse in many dressage movements. If this is not the case then the highest marks cannot be awarded.
  • behind the vertical – if a line is drawn straight up from the ground then the front of the horses head from muzzle to ears should follow this straight line. If a horse is behind the vertical then the muzzle is too close to the horses chest and a line following the front of the horses head from ear to muzzle would not be vertical … the imaginary line would actually hit the ground between the horses legs

Valegro on the other hand was consistently in a perfect outline with the poll as the highest point and was never behind the vertical. I believe that this was the key difference between the two tests and what gave Charlotte and Valegro the extra marks that gave them the gold medal.

Laura Bechtolsheimer won the bronze medal with a fantastic freestyle. I believe that Laura was disappointed with her scores in both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special and she was absolutely determined to get a better result in the Freestyle. She rode Mistral Hojris brilliantly and he responded with a superb test to win the bronze medal.

The team gold medal was won with some fantastic tests by Charlotte, Laura and Carl in the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special. Valegro was superb in both the tests but for me the test that stands out is Carl Hester’s Grand Prix Special test. Uthopia was in top form for this test and produced a stunning Grand Prix Special. As with Laura I believe he may have been disappointed with his Grand Prix test score and was determined to get a better result in the Grand Prix Special.

Show Jumping

Great Britain won a fantastic team gold following a very exciting jump off. I must admit I have never competed in affiliated Show Jumping and I dont really follow Show Jumping. I may be being totally unfair but I dont believe that this medal was expected … certainly not be me! However, I watched the competition and Great Britain deserved the gold medal by holding their nerve in a jump off with the Netherlands. The jump off rules where the team with most clear round wins but if there is a tie then the team with the fastest time wins results in a very exciting jump off. Great Britain’s Peter Charles riding Vindicat was in the position of needing a clear round so he went for a slow clear with the pressure that if he did not go clear then the time would be too slow to win. Peter held his nerve and jumped clear to win Team Gold for Great Britain.

Eventing

On TV the Cross Country course looked twisty and tight over some undulating land. It was a serious test and with the city of London in the background it produced some good shots for TV. Great Britain went well in the dressage and the team were in third place going into the cross country. Great Britain’s team all went clear round cross country and three of the team were within the time. Great Britain rose from third to second after the cross country. The team had two clear rounds in the Team Show Jumping but unfortunately the two clear rounds were for the two riders with time penalties over the cross country. The three riders with clear rounds over the cross country course all got time penalties or had fences down. If the riders who went clear over the cross country had also gone clear over the show jumps then Great Britain may have threatened Germany for the gold medal. Great Britain won a silver medal behind a strong German team who were favourites to win.

The Individual Olympic Show Jumping Medals will be decided today over two rounds with a possible jump off for the medals. There have been 3 qualification show jumping rounds already which have reduced the number of individual competitors from over 70 to 38.

Enter Horse Clips’ competition to predict the result of the Individual Dressage Freestyle to music competition.

Today round 4 & 5 will decide the medals:

  • Round 4: top 20 scores will qualify for round 5 based on the score on round 4.
  • Round 5: the combined score from round 4 and 5 will decide the Olympic Individual Jumping medals.
  • Jump Off: if any of the medal places are tied there will be a jump off to decide the medals.

Full details of the format of the Olympic Show Jumping competition.

Steve Guerdat (Switzerland) and Nino Des Buissonnets have won gold as the only combination to go double clear. Gerco Schroder (Netherlands) and Cian O’Connor (Ireland) both had just a single time penalty over the two rounds and had a jump off to decide the silver and bronze medals. Gerco Schroder was the first to go and went clear with a fast time. Cian O’Connor had no choice but to go for it. He was clear and up on the clock but, of course he would not be aware of this, and he went for it and galloped at the last fence and unfortunately knocked a pole. So Gerco Schroder and London get Silver and Cian O’Connor and Blue Loyd 12 get bronze.

Nick Skelton and Scott Brash went clear in the first round but they both had four faults in the second round and dropped to fifth place. Ben Maher also had four faults to add to four faults in the first round and finished in 9th place.

The third round of the show jumping is

  • Team Final: using the combined scores from previous rounds.
  • Individual: 3rd round with the scores of the yesterday and today added together and only the top 35 scores proceeding to the next round. There is also a limit of 3 competitors per country.

A fantastic afternoons entertainment with GB winning gold after a very exciting jump off with The Netherlands. The jump off was for all team members with the country with the most clears winning. If both countries had the same number of clears then the fastest country would win. With one horse left to jump from each country GB had two clears (from Nick Skelton and Ben Maher) and The Netherlands only had one clear round. The pressure was therefore on to go clear and watching it was clear that the tactic was to go slow but clear. Peter Charles held his nerve and jumped a fantastic clear round to give GB gold. Brilliant!
